About the role: The Office of Chief Examiner (OCE) Legal Unit is part of the Legal Services Department, Victoria Police. The VPSG-6 Managing Principal Lawyer is responsible for overseeing the independent legal team embedded at the OCE, which performs a specialised legal function dedicated to serving the Chief Commissioner of Police as well as the independently appointed Chief Examiner (and Examiners). Your duties will include: Preparing applications for coercive powers orders under the Major Crime (Investigative Powers) Act 2004. Preparing applications for witness summonses to the Supreme Court under s. 14 of the Act. Appearances in the Supreme, County and Magistrates’ Court of Victoria. Advising and appearing on applications for rescission or variation of confidentiality arrangements. Briefing counsel and appearing as instructing solicitor or counsel in court for Chief Examiner and Chief Commissioner litigation under the Major Crime (Investigative Powers) Act 2004. Appearing on applications for certificates under the Act. All communications with legal representatives appearing for witnesses summonsed before the Chief Examiner Preparing and prosecuting contempt proceedings under the Major Crime (Investigative Powers) Act 2004 in the Supreme Court. Providing legal advice in relation to these aforementioned applications. Attending legal services meetings when required both at Divisional and Department level. Stakeholder liaison with the Victorian Inspectorate and the Public Interest Monitor. Managing, training and mentoring all members of the OCE legal team and support staff in OCE matters and communications with operational staff. As the successful applicant, you will have: Admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (Unrestricted Practising Certificate). High level understanding and demonstrated substantial experience as a court advocate across all jurisdictions with significant superior court advocacy. Substantial experience in the investigations and or prosecutions as well as significant demonstrated experience in the area of disclosure and criminal appeals. Demonstrated experience in the provision of high quality written legal and strategic advice. High level of resilience and emotional intelligence. Experience in leading, coaching, mentoring and developing lawyers in managing high volume and complex matters. Ability to work and lead a team in a developing and emerging work environment.
