About the team The role sits on the Sydney Metro Property, Planning and Placemaking Legal team, which forms legal views and provides legal advice to the project teams. The opportunity We have an opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel – Planning to join Sydney Metro’s high performing legal team. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel – Property, Planning and Placemaking, you will provide expert legal advice and services on a range of planning legal work to support the delivery and operation of Sydney Metro, working across multiple major packages across Sydney. Key accountabilities include: Providing specialist planning and environmental legal advice regarding approvals, statutory processes and compliance associated with Sydney Metro’s projects; Reviewing documentation associated with planning and environmental approval processes, including EISs; Drafting and reviewing agreements and other documentation related to statutory processes under planning and environmental legislation, including voluntary planning agreements; Day-to-day management of all matters in the New South Wales Land and Environment Court and associated appeals, including all Class 3 appeals to compensation determinations associated with compulsory acquisitions for Sydney Metro projects; You will deliver high quality, high value, timely and solutions focussed independent advice for business groups across the organisation (planning, property, commercial, project and delivery teams) as well as the executive and the Board. The role will provide advice relevant to the area of expertise which can cover highly complex and sensitive issues with high profiles and high financial, reputational or operational risks. About you You will be an experienced and tertiary qualified law professional with a current legal practicing certificate in NSW. Ideally you will have worked on a wide variety of planning matters and possess superior knowledge and expertise in planning law. From a sector perspective we will be preferencing candidates with demonstrable experience of planning law relating to major projects, infrastructure, and/or the public sector. Key to success in the role will be your previous experience in the NSW Land and Environment Court. Ideally this will include exposure to the law relating to compulsory acquisition and/or Class 3 claims within the Court (but this is not essential).
