One full-time, fixed term role – 6 month appointment (leave backfill) About us The Office of the Public Advocate (OPA) is an independent statutory agency that aims to uphold and protect the rights and interests of people with a disability in Victoria and works to eliminate abuse, neglect and exploitation. The Legal Unit provides legal services to the Public Advocate and those to whom she delegates her authority. About the role As the Senior Legal Officer, you will be responsible for: providing legal advice and casework, including tribunal and court appearance work collaborating with other OPA programs, is to develop resources that are legally correct and practically useful to various programs at OPA providing education and training in legal matters as part of OPA’s quality assurance program assisting OPA’s volunteer programs comply with their legal and ethical requirements. About you As the Senior Legal Officer, you will possess: knowledge of, or demonstrated an ability to acquire knowledge of, laws relating to: (1) substituted and supported decision-making (guardianship and administration, powers of attorney, litigation guardianship, medical decision-making); (2) privacy and confidentiality; (3) the National Disability Insurance Scheme and the NDIS Rules, policies and processes; and (4) rights of persons with disabilities generally and specifically under the Disability Act 2006 and Part 12A of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 experience in obtaining comprehensive instructions and providing advice and assistance that is based on evidence and applying relevant legal principles experience in advocacy and litigation experience in developing practice resources (policies, standard operating procedures etc.) about matters that have a legal component to assist non-legally educated staff and providing education and training to staff. The Senior Legal Officer will hold qualification as an Australian Legal Practitioner (as defined in Schedule 1 of the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014 ).
